Beginning of Mooresville NC
This town started originally as a town that could serve as a passing through the area for the railroad. It was originally founded because of the railroad. There was a lot of cotton shipments passing through the area and there was a huge demand for a place that the trains could stop in the area.
Some people recognized that this could be a huge opportunity for a small town like Mooresville. Thus the town was officially founded to serve this purpose. This was done by a man named John Franklin Moore when he offered an area to the AT&O railroad. They also agreed that there would be an increase of business for the local area that would be of great benefit.
Mooresville and the War
The Civil War of 1863 brought some problems to Mooresville. The railroad was used to provide a path to Danville for the war and the economy slowed down significantly. The tracks were returned in 1872 and the town of Mooresville recovered.
Incorporation of Mooresville
The town was officially incorporated on March 3, 1873, and the NC legislature officially passed a bill for the town. The government was to consist of a mayor and 6 commissioners. Originally the town consisted of two roads and a public road that runs north and south.
Mooresville NC Development
Later on, Mooresville developed into more of a trading center. The items traded ranged from farming supplies to general supplies, to cotton, to flower. The cotton trade around this point in time was booming and it benefited the city of Mooresville significantly.
As the town grew it prospered in many ways. There was schools, churches, stores, and farms created and the economy boomed. The Presbyterian church was the first church that was established in the area. It was founded on November 13, 1876, and consisted of 19 members that joined from a different prospect church.
The cotton industry boomed in the late 1800’s because of the building and organization of cotton mills, textile mills, flour mills and was a huge part of the development of the town.
The population of Mooresville NC also exploded over the following years. It started out with just 25 people in the year of 1873. By 1880 the town now had 584 people. In 1914 there were 3500 people and it further increased to 7000 people in the next decade.
In fact by 1914 Mooresville had 2 flour mills, 2 cotton seed mills, a lumber plant, some vehicle shops, an ice factory, a furniture factory and even more. There were even some electrical poles that were taken out from the business section and put underground and connected to iron standards at the principal corners.
Nowadays Mooresville has gotten very good with architecture and history. When you compare it to other towns in the area you see just how impressive the history of Mooresville NC really is.
