Prevention

It may sound quite obvious but one of the best ways to keep your floors clean is to prevent them from getting dirty in the first place.  You can accomplish this in a couple of different ways.  One is to simply put out a sign that asks guests and residents of your home to please remove their shoes before coming inside.  This will prevent people from tracking mud and dirt inside.  Another tactic is to put out a “welcome” mat at the entrance of your home.  If you ask us?  We say do both so you have all your bases covered.

General Tips for Different Types

Obviously there are different types of flooring and they all have different ways that they need to be cleaned.  We will just go over a few of the most common.

Carpeting

Carpeting is one of the flooring types that will require a little more care than for example hardwood.  One of the best things to do for carpet maintenance is to clean up spills immediately.  Letting them sit is only going to make it harder to get it out later.  What substance to use for the stain?  Well that depends on the stain but there are many, and remember to blot not scrub the stain.

Vinyl

Vinyl is one of the easier types of flooring to clean as it doesn’t stain as easily as carpet.  You can just use a wet mop with some detergent and warm water.  Gently mop the floor around once per week and you will greatly extend the life of your flooring.

Hardwood

When you clean hardwood floors the most important thing to keep in mind is that you need to use special products designed for hardwood and not generic household cleaning products.  Using typical products can actually damage the floor.  Another thing not to do is use water and mop it.  A little bit of water can be ok, but pouring water directly on your hardwood can cause damage.  A better way to clean your hardwood is to just use a swiffer type mop, or a generic mop with just a little bit of water and a cleaner that is specifically designed for hardwood.

If you follow these tips you can surely extend the life of your flooring by quite a lot. www.lkncarpet.com
